Before we get started looking at drones, there are a few things I think are essential for you to think about. It helps you gain a better understanding of what you’re looking for.

Well, I guess this is an essential thing to think about when purchasing an FPV racing quadcopter, especially if you're looking to compete. If you're a beginner, I'd get something with multiple speed settings, or something slower.


It's quite likely you're going to crash your drone at some point, especially if it's your first time flying a drone. Make sure the FPV drone your about to purchase can take damage without breaking too easily. It will save you money and time having to make repairs after each flight.


Speed isn't the only factor that helps you win races. The best racing drones need to have the ability to maneuver around tight angles quickly and sharply. This means performing 360° flips and turns to beat your opponents in turns to win the race.

Flight Time

The best part about owning a drone is flying it. Which is why it's important to know how long the drone can stay in the air. It's especially important when you're flying your drone somewhere it can be lost. One thing to check is if the manufacture supplies extra batteries with the pack.

The body of the Kodak Thrust UAV is made using a carbon fiber frame, while the side skirts feature a polycarbonate plastic, which allows 49 programmable LEDs to shine through.

If you’re looking for an ARF racing drone, you need not look any further; you don’t get much better. It reaches high speeds with minimal effort, although it does eat batteries. Add the speed to the specially tuned motors and the F4 processor, and you get a drone that can turn sharp angles with ease.

One thing Iove about the drone is the design; it looks fantastic and certainly has a “wow” factor when you unbox it. And on top of that, it’s very durable, with changeable parts. One thing I’d like to mention again is the lack of controller and radio system, which is a shame considering the high price.

Overall this drone is up there with the greats; they really are beasty racing drones with incredible capabilities. Saying this, I wouldn’t recommend this to a novice. It’s too quick, which can lead to crashes out of the blue.

The Arris X is a small quadcopter and durable racing drone, don’t let the small size fool you; it has some serious power. And for your convenience, it comes ready to fly in the preassembled kit.

The frame is constructed using 1.5 mm pure carbon fiber for added strength and makes it lighter (weighs 161g) than glass carbon fiber.

On the arms of the racing drone, they’re double plated; again, this increases the durability under high-speed coalitions.

If you like flying with goggles, then the 700TVL camera with adjustable tilt produces a good quality picture with minimal delay.

The FPV camera can be adjusted from 0-30° to give you the ultimate flying experience at an angle you can trust. As for battery life, you can expect around 8-10 minutes of flight time, depending on the weather conditions, looking for speed?

The ARRIS X-Speed 250B uses 2300KV brushless motor combined with the three-bladed 5042 propellers to give unprecedented speed and agility.

The design of the Arris X-speed is fantastic; it’s robust, durable, and very lightweight. I put this down to the pure carbon fiber shell. Another benefit was the double-plated arms, which kept the drone intact, even after some high speed crashes.

When it comes to flying, the FPV racing drone was exceptional; it performed sharp maneuvering even when moving a high velocity. As for the camera, it wasn’t the best, the image could break up at times, but it did remain vibration-free, which can only be a good thing.

Overall, this has to be one of my favorite race drones on the market, no matter what flying experience you have, you’re guaranteed a great time.

So, what did we think? Well, the small design made it perfect for indoor flying but would have been better with some built-in prop guards. Luckily the aerospace-grade carbon-fiber really helped with durability for the drone; great if you’re learning how to fly.

When it comes to flying the drone, it really does have some serious power; with two batteries connected, you can really feel the thurst behind the drone. And with the F4 processor, the drone performed excellently, providing a stable with the capability of 360° flips and turns.

If you’re looking for speed and maneuverability, you don’t get much better, the one downside is the camera is slightly low quality, but nothing to worry too much about.

Some drones tend to be too bulky to fit in a regular backpack, but the foldable nature makes this drone easy to transport.

There are a few outstanding features that come with this drone, and for the price, it’s a bit of a bargain. The camera had great functionality giving clear and unbroken footage. One of my favorite parts about this drone is the ability to fold it away neatly once you’ve finished flying.

As for the flying, this ready to fly (RTF) racing drone performed excellently, and although it’s not the fastest drone on the list it still performs pretty well. I have to repeat it; this drone is perfect for beginners; it handles perfectly, and can perform Sharp flip and turns.

For the price, it’s a great piece of kit if you’re looking to dip your toe into the drone world without committing too much cash. You also get plenty of choice with flight mode features to get you started.

For the low price, you really do get a lot, but I’d aim this more for the beginner looking to get started with FPV racing. It features brushed motors, which does limit the power a little, with the addition of brushless motors this drone could become seriously quick.

Having a set of goggles that come with the drone is a definite bonus, especially when you look at how much they cost. The problem is, it’s very cumbersome, which means having them on your head can become a nuisance after long periods.

Overall a great piece of kit, but a veteran flyer might be looking for something with a little bit more to offer. But if you’re just starting and you want something cheap with lots of features, then this would be a great place to start.

This Is The Best FPV Racing Drone For Most People

For most people, the best racing drones were the Kodak; for speed, it was incredible, and it performed excellently in tight conditions. For me, it’s a pure breed racing machine that’s lightweight yet remains durable during crashes and over unexpected events.

Another nice feature was the programmable lights, meaning each racer could have their own color, making it easier to track the winner. The one downside is it didn’t come with a flight controller or radio, which in the end means an extra cost.

It’s normal to have questions when you’re looking to purchase new products no matter what it is.

This is why I’ve answered some of the most asked questions surrounding the best FPV racing drones, so you don’t have to go searching.

How much does a racing drone cost?  Well that can heavily depend on what you’re looking for from FPV racing drones. So let’s start from the beginning, they can start from $60-100. Which is nothing when you think about it, but functionality wise this is only good for beginners.

Once you’ve got some experience behind and you know it’s something you will enjoy, it will be time to upgrade, or maybe you’re already there. The upgrade will go to around $200-300 for the racing quadcopter, which will get you speeding around fields.

Now we’re at the veteran point, which is the point you might want to start competing, but this doesn’t come cheap! A custom-built racer can set you back $300-700. But it doesn’t stop there; a good pair of FPV goggles can set you back another $300-500.

Really there’s no limit to how fast they can as yet; they can literally go as fast you can build it to go. Most average racing drones go around 50-80 MPH. But after a custom build, most will reach speeds of 120MPH.

The DRL recently grabbed themselves a Guinness World Record after reaching an average speed of 163 MPH over a 100-meter course.

It really depends if you’re talking about custom-built drones or RFT drones. If you’re looking for a ready to fly build; you should check you the Kodak Thurst or the Arris X-speed 250; for a custom build, you should replicate the DRL Racer 3 for the fastest experience.

But if you want to take on the fastest racing drone, you are going to have to build it yourself!

The short answer is no; you don’t need a permit. You may not even have to register it if it’s used indoors. If you fly racing drones outdoors, you will have to register the drone, but you might need to get a license. The FAA stats you do NOT need a permit for the following conditions:

  • If you’re following the guidelines set by the council
  • You’re 5 miles away from traffic control and airports
  • If you’re flying the drone as a hobby and for recreational reasons
  • If your drone remains insight
  • If it weighs less than 55 pounds
